The aim of many designers today, be it interior or landscape is to bring the outdoors in and conversely, the indoors out. And as our contributor Adam Robinson says, “There is no reason why the outdoors can’t be as styled as the indoors.” With this in mind, the walls and ceilings of our outdoor space should be given the same attention as our interior. After all, careful consideration of the material selected for this area allows for an additional textural element to the space.
One great solution for this is lining boards. Glosswood lining boards have been used to line ceilings and walls that extend from indoors to out, uniting spaces and creating that quintessential Australian indoor-outdoor feel that we all know and love.
Glosswood have recently collaborated with Interior Designer Chloe Gordini and Artist Annabel Dixon to push the boundaries of its range of solid-timber products. The result is a diverse collection of walling ideas that harness the usability of the V-joint tongue-and-groove boards, while looking to global design trends and practicality.
“We wanted to show the versatility and design possibility of our prefinished lining boards,” says Pam Thomson, Glosswood Director.
Whether indoors or undercover outdoors, our boards are a savvy solution to personalise your space with beauty, functionality or wow-factor.
Glosswood Prefinished Lining Boards are made from sustainably grown and harvested Paulownia hardwood timber, they come in eight lanolin-enriched oil-based Matte Range stains and six low-VOC UV-coated finishes in natural and designer colours (made from natural oxides).
Boards are available in 90mm (9mm thick) and 130mm (10mm thick) widths, while a versatile range of deep-cut profile boards, called Designer Lining, are 170mm wide and 26mm thick. Glosswood Prefinished Lining Boards are designed to be used outdoors (undercover) and indoors.
Here are some new products which take prefinished lining boards to a new level.
The 90mm wide UV Distressed White prefinished lining board has been cut into long lengths to create an elegant herringbone pattern. The graduations of colour in the finish of each board work perfectly to accentuate the pattern. “I balanced repetition with board length for a sense of elegance and simplicity,” says Chloe.
The new Matte Range colour, Spotted Gum, brings a ‘midcentury yet now’ feel to a wall. This wall is made in three panels (boards come in 3.6m lengths, so we cut them into 1.2m lengths), offsetting the top and bottom panels to create the extra texture and interest. “While we have one, two, three and four-profile prefinished lining boards in the range, we all loved the idea of the four-profile as a more refined, textural option.”
“I liked the idea of taking the wall back to basics by layering it with a pine frame,” says Chloe. “It takes its cue from industrial and farm shed structures, where the inner workings of the wall are seen. The 90mm Matte Charcoal prefinished lining boards were used and a pine frame attached to the front (we left the processing stamps on the timber for that industrial feel). It’s an interactive alternative to the traditional flat wall because it gives instant shelving so that you can use it as a bookcase or display ‘windows’ for art, collections, vases and more.”
“Our Art Wall has been created using our Raw Paulownia lining board and Bauwerk Colour paint. Perth artist Annabel Dixon used yellow, white and Bauwerk base paints, mixing them and sanding the dry finish to create the beautiful graduations of colour. “We like to think of it as a functional Rothko-inspired piece!”
“Paulownia is like a chameleon; you can finish it with paint, soap or any other coating or finish and it will transform beautifully and perfectly. I had never worked with this material before, so really enjoyed the process and am continuing to experiment with it in my art practice,” says Annabel. “I would encourage anyone who wants a bespoke solution for their spaces to get hands-on with this material as it’s a lot of fun. It’s also the perfect timber to work with in this way as doesn’t have a lot of knots interrupting the natural grain – and the natural grain is really beautiful.”
The 130mm UV White Gloss prefinished lining board has been utilised to create three different feels: Contemporary Country; Hamptons; and Beachside. The beauty of this board is that you can see the definition of the timber grain under the white UV coating (it’s not just a flat finish). “This means it offers the practicality of other prefinished options on the market, but has that real timber depth about it.”
