Coming out of winter in Melbourne we often find ourselves craving for greens and screening. One of our favourite screening trees is the New Zealand Chaste Tree. Visiting past gardens, it is always a plant, which catches our eyes at this time of the year, with it’s lush green crinkle cut foliage always wintering well.
As a fast grower it can quickly reach a screening height on par with Ficus hillii and given it also responds well to regular pruning it certainly offers itself as an attractive alternative.
Another big draw-card to Vitex lucens is that possums do not eat the foliage!
One downside however is its availability, as there are very few nurseries that supply the tree. If any tree growers are reading; this could be a winner.
