Plant Profile: Loropetalum chinense ‘China Pink’

What a marvelous thing! Tough and beautiful. People make the mistake of clipping it with shears either as a hedge or as a sphere. Stop doing that people! It ruins the natural habit of the plant. Look at the way it grows, the stems and leaves create lovely sheets that arch out with a slightly pendulous effect. Please prune it to size with your secateurs – put the shears away.

Screen Shot 2015-05-29 at 10.17.40 amThe burgundy foliage and pink flowers don’t sit well in every garden design but used with the right colour palette this shrub is reliable and giving. I actually prefer it when it’s not in flower!

It can be kept pruned to 1m comfortably but will reach 2m if left to its own devices.
