If you are a fan of gardens and Pinterest, you may have seen this particular garden featured more than once. Having seen the images myself previously, I wanted to delve deeper into the garden and find out who, why and where.
The garden was designed by Nathan Burkett, a multi-award winning Landscape Designer responsible for some incredible contemporary gardens throughout Australia. He recently won gold at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show for his show garden ‘Equilibrium’.
The owners of this large period home in Malvern had recently built a large contemporary extension, and there was little remaining room for gardens or landscaping, therefore Nathan Burkett Design needed to work with what little space was left, to transform the exterior into an impressive outdoor entertaining haven.
It is a stand-out representation of our aesthetic which is architectural but with a keen focus on creating structure out of organic materials and plantings.
The design for this garden included a feature lap pool framing the back boundary of the home, with a paved outdoor entertaining area running alongside the modern living room and kitchen, leading to a decked outdoor sitting area with a barbeque and raised garden beds.
In order to conserve space, the pergola was designed to cantilever over the dining area so as not to use up valuable space with vertical posts or poles. Plantings were kept to the boundaries of the home, and existing walls were retained and rendered in order to create a dark moody backdrop which perfectly complemented the garden’s neutral palette with pops of bamboo green.
Nathan Burkett Design hand-made a Spotted Gum timber dining table complete with an in-built herb garden as its centrepiece, in order to bring that same softness into the alfresco dining area.
Japanese Maples were used to dappled light throughout the garden whilst Mother in Law’s Tongue, Buxus and Bamboo were used for colour, mood and texture. Mass plantings of Gardenias also offer a beautiful fragrance to the garden.
To meet the brief for a bespoke, contemporary garden that would match the home’s recent extension, Nathan Burkett Design custom designed and manufactured a number of bespoke features in the garden. These included the barbeque, a curved tiled garden bed wall, the dining table and tall dramatic steel pots in order to deliver a level of workmanship befitting this high-end renovation.
The result is a stunning garden that effortlessly incorporates sight, touch and smell to deliver incredible bespoke design in this challenging space.
The short of it…
