Aptly named, The Small Garden is a boutique design and construction business that specialises in the design and install of urban spaces, both gardens and outdoor areas with city living in mind.

The Small Garden was created by husband and wife team, Tom and Carolynn Brooks, after seeing the wide spread under use of urban areas such as courtyards, balconies and rooftops. “We wanted to show owners what was possible for their outdoor areas through quality design and innovative construction methods. Small urban outdoor spaces such as courtyards, balconies and rooftops have been overlooked in the past by building designers and owners. Now, with every square metre of property having a premium price, we decided to provide the know-how to transform these areas into livable and beautiful outdoor spaces.”

carolynn and tomTom is a qualified Landscape Designer and has over 15 years of landscape construction and building experience. Carolynn manages the styling of outdoor spaces, and sourcing and supplying outdoor products for both residential and commercial projects.

At uni, I set up a t-shirt screen-printing business. I didn’t sell many t-shirts, but the launch party was a blast!

Tom is “creative, impatient and willing to push the boundaries of conventional practices. Growing up I was always interested in design and creating things.” Carolynn on the other hand is always “calm and positive, trying to make the most of each day.” The two together make a formidable team.

Each of their projects is unique and designed with the client’s style in mind, taking into consideration the architectural style of the home, ensuring that each garden is designed to complement its surrounds.

It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation.

“The priority for us is to always think of customised solutions for our clients’ outdoor areas and not be restricted by products and materials already on the market. It takes more time, but is rewarding to realise you have created something that hasn’t been done before.”

The Small Garden have recently evolved to extend their business to urban property developers, offering a new and very clever balcony package. “We will be working with like-minded designers and forward thinking developers to create livable urban outdoor spaces that can be enjoyed for years to come.”

Certainly a step in the right direction for the future of our communities. And judging by the quality of the concepts, we can’t wait to see what unfolds!
