Michael Bates started his career at the grass roots as a nursery apprentice. He then studied horticulture before spending three years as the first student of Japanese master landscape architect Masayoshi Uchiyama. He took this sensibility along for the ride and started Bates Landscape in 1993 as a one-man band. The business has grown steadily ever since. Michael collaborates with leading architects, landscape architects and designers and has built well over 1000 gardens at last count. His work stands the test of time, and has earned Bates Landscapes the reputation as one of Sydney’s leading landscape contractors.
